High-power battery storage for AI data centres
AI infrastructure creates power fluctuations that conventional UPS batteries were not designed to manage. XNO® was.
THE CHALLENGE
AI infrastructure runs on power. Managing that power is the hard problem
AI data centres draw power very differently from traditional IT infrastructure. Large GPU clusters ramp from tens of megawatts to over a hundred megawatts as workloads start and stop — many times per day. Smoothing these fluctuations matters commercially: a site that manages its own power profile effectively requires a less demanding grid connection, deploys faster, and can participate in grid balancing services.
Batteries sit at three layers of the data centre power architecture — site-level BESS, UPS, and rack-level BBU — each playing a different role. At every layer, a battery that charges as fast as it discharges is more valuable. LFP's slow charge rate forces oversizing at every layer: more hardware, more space, more capital.
WHY XNO®
Symmetric power. Right-sized installation.
1.
UPS — the near-term entry point
XNO® charges symmetrically at the same rate it discharges — at 10C, continuously, without degradation. A correctly sized XNO® installation replaces an oversized LFP bank at a fraction of the footprint and capital cost, while participating fully in active power management and grid-balancing services that LFP's charge rate cannot support.
2.
Rack-level BBU — the longer-term opportunity
As AI rack power densities increase and data centre architectures evolve toward higher-voltage DC distribution, battery buffering is progressively moving closer to the rack. XNO®'s combination of symmetric high-rate performance, EUCAR Level 3 safety, and >50,000 cycle life addresses all requirements for this application simultaneously.
PERFORMANCE
The numbers that matter
Symmetric 10C
Recharge in minutes; eliminates charge-rate-driven oversizing in LFP UPS installations
EUCAR Level 3
No thermal runaway in confined infrastructure environments where a thermal event is catastrophic
>50,000 cycles
Matches data centre asset life without mid-life battery replacement
−30°C to +55°C
Full performance without climate control; suited to edge and modular deployments
