Echion and Topsoe publishes Whitepaper showcasing high performance, cobalt-free, 3V LNMO-XNO™ cell system

Echion Technologies (“Echion”) and Topsoe have published a whitepaper, summarising the results of a collaborate effort to showcase the market-leading lithium-ion active material technologies of each company. For the first time, Echion’s high performance mixed niobium oxide (XNO™) anode has been successfully paired with Topsoe’s high-voltage spinel LNMO cathode.

The results presented in the Whitepaper include half-cell performances of both anode and cathodes and full cell performances including charge and discharge rate vs. capacity retention and cycle life performance.  Commercial-format cell modelling is also presented, which provides indicative energy densities achievable by the LNMO-XNO™ cell system.  Importantly, benefits over other cell systems, such as NMC-LTO are highlighted.

“The work presented in this Whitepaper shows the potential for the LNMO-XNO™ cell system to provide a safe, long life, high power yet energy-dense lithium-ion cell, which ticks the boxes for heavy duty applications and where Total Cost of Ownership is critical. These include off-highway vehicles, AGVs, and railway rolling stock.” Ben Ting, Commercial Director, Echion.

It is important to note that whilst both Echion and Topsoe have worked to optimise active material loadings and electrode designs, only standard electrolytes with no additives were used in test cells.  “By purposefully restricting ourselves to standard electrolytes, we wish to show that further optimisation to improve rate capability and cycle life performances can still be achieved by cell manufacturers and their proprietary electrolyte systems.” – Dr Loubna El Ouatani, Chief Product Officer, Echion.

“Over the past year, we have developed a great working relationship with Echion.  With the combined advantages of each our battery active materials, we look forward to seeing what market interest this Whitepaper generates and will be on hand to support potential customers in commercialising this cell system.”  – Jeppe Winther Hedegaard, Senior Business Development Manager, Topsoe

The Whitepaper is available for download here and Echion and Topsoe welcome opportunities for collaboration with cell manufacturers and OEMs interested in the LNMO-XNO™ cell system.
